[ source ]
MY CHARACTER THURSDAY HOP ( 14 )

Month of February always reminds me on Valentine’s Day, and that’s today folks (^_^) ... did you ‘all got a special-gift for someone special, or even get surpises from a secret admirer ? For me, is  pretty quite in here, ‘coz my family and relative doesn’t car much about this kind celebration – they said love should be appreciated and cherish just in one occation, but must be celebrate every days as our thank-ful on His Greatness. But still, I remember those days with my buddies, they are who introduce me with ‘silly but fun’ celebration, gosh ... I miss them now, and we cannot sees each others ‘coz everyone got they own life and live far away from where I living ( I mean literaly, some of them are in different country now).

Now why I’m babbling about this on this Character Thursday Hop ? (before Fanda thrown me out xixi) ... on this event I will post character that makes me thinking the subject on ‘Love’ - I will takes from Dickens' characters since I'm also on his works this month to Celebrating Dickens on 201th  years.

1. SIDNEY CARTON vs CHARLES DARNAY on Lucie Manette [ from “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens ]
  • Are they protagonist or antagonist?
You can say that they both protagonist, but from the very start – middle – ending, Dickens puts ‘mystery’ on their character, never quite knew or ever quess what’s they next role, are they actualy the good-one or the bad-one. Sometimes we will ‘think’ that Charles Darnay is the hero, then he got hidden secret of his past, involving something awful and scary. And then Sidney character, really interesting because he seems so ‘villain’ – a dark-mysterious guy, then slowly he began to open-up him self, giving us a glimpse of his kind heart and caring person but itself.
  • Who are they? What was their role in the book?
Charles Darnay is a handsome, good-looking, and respectable young man, who caught into the war and revolution simply because he inherit the family names – who at first he thrown-away, even the family royalty,  as a protest of his dissagreement on the way their behavior and life style. He have good intension, good manner, and good heart – that actually gonna makes him had to face his own death on something he never done, simply because he believing on the honor of family names.
Sidney Carton was the opposite of Charles Darnay, but he also have interesting personality, he hide his own gentleness and kind heart with his attitude who looks never careless about anything else nor somebody else. His sarcastic and rude acts, often show-up, and only few of people who really knows him truly. Beside his careless act, he indeed the person who had meticulious and deep observation on everything – so whoever in Sidney’s eyes, will like an open-book without their own knowledge. I guess if Sidney’s have a girlfriend, he will know her favorite, her affection, her dislike, what’s she want the most – but can he actually give the same affection back on her ? That’s gonna be another question ...
  • What was your strongest impression on the character(s)? You can quote the dialogue or narration you got the impression from.
Just when at first I think Charles Darnay gonna be the hero of this stories, my mind and interest drawn further on Sidney’s – that really quite weird ‘coz he ‘dissappears’ on the middle of the stories, but when he show-up, his present give us strong impression, and while Diskens giving Charles Darnay a brightning light surrounding his character, his past life – he neglect  or intend to puts Sidney in dark-shadow of mystery, until the end (that’s makes me so furious)
“A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.”
“Sadly, sadly, the sun rose; it rose upon no sadder sight than the man of good abilities and good emotions, incapable of their directed exercise, incapable of his own help and his own happiness, sensible of the blight on him, and resigning himself to let it eat him away.”

  • What are the strengths or weaknesses of your character(s)?
Well as a comparisson, maybe I can describe Charles Darnay as Edward Cullen and Sidney Carton as Jacob Black, or between Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley ( some fangirling will gonna hunt and kill me for this ) – what I meant is the both had their strengths and weakness as the opposite-attract, likes the  other one got the dark-side, then the other got the bright-side, so is up to you to decide, which one you gonna prefer (^_^)
Charles Darnay describe as the good choice and good pick when comes to looks a perfect husband in the future. He’s caring, loving, honorable, excellent manner as well attitude and good looking too. Sidney Carton describe as a young man who always looking out the world with pessimistic, talks with rude and sarcarsm, really introvert person who keep his self from others. But the both have the same strong feelings to the same woman, so what would they do, nor how far they gonna taking the falls and misery from the woman they falling for ?  The only things I really want to know, why Sidney choose not to change his mind about him self – as giving another chance to another life, what is the sorrow he carrying around his life, that he had to choose ‘death’ as the answers ??
  • How do they develop throughout the book?
In the beginning, both characters are equal on how mystery surrounding their life, specially on their past life. Through pages, both characters having a journey to find the answers what’s awaits for them in the future, and to imbrace the light on their dark-shadow of life. But the progress seems give them separate conclusion, while Charles Darnay finally open-up his past and accept them as it is, Sidney find his answers or you can say ‘the light’ of his life is to sacrifice life – a redemption of his souls.
  • What makes you love/hate them?
None of the characters in this stories makes me hate or dislike them, even the antagonist one, but my love would goes to Sidney Carton. Not only ‘coz his tragic life, but I think Dickens really rude to treated this spesific character. If you taking back from the beginning, Sidney’s character doesn’t appears to much as Charles Darnay, he just show-up sometimes in between stories. But everytime he show, we can relate on his misery – his sorrow and even his passion. It is unfair for me that Charles Darnay got a chance to redempt his dark-past, when Sidney’s never have that chance or did he ... while he had to face death in front of his ??
  • What lessons or influences you got from them?
The only influence they giving me is I want more of Dickens stories, yes his writing makes me angry, furious, and dissapointed, but he’s really good on making all these characters alive inside my mind – even after finishesd reading them. The complexity and twisted-angle on each, had drawn me into another perspective. If I have to choose between Charles Darnay or Sidney Carton as if they are in front of me, I’ll be confuse ‘coz either of them cannot be separate from each others. I guess it’s true that Dickens write this two characters from his own believe that he was both Charles Darnay and Sidney Carton – two personality trap inside one man, like the good and the bad – is always there inside everyone mind. How about you then ?

2. Philip “Pip’ Pirrip vs Miss Havisham on Estella [ from “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens ]
  • Are they protagonist or antagonist?
I thought they both protagonis at first readings, then in the middle, Miss Havisham reveals has secret agenda regarding the relationship between Pip and Estella, so it’s makes her antagonist, but then also reveals she becoming such crazy person ‘coz she is a victim of her past. Then we talks about Pip – poor young man who his life becoming like a roller-coaster, changing upside-down or turning in such danger curve, but when he also realize ‘the plays’ involving his life, he began carry away to follow the wrong path – it that’s makes him antagonist nor just like Miss Havisham – they both are victims of revenge of the past ?
  • Who are they? What was their role in the book?
Pip was an orphan, raised by his cruel sisters, when his life stumble into two stranger that gonna taking a very important part of his future : Abel Magwitch – an excape convict who suddenly becoming a wealthy man, and Miss Havisham – a wealthy spinster, have an adopted daugther name Estella – who become Pip’s first love. If Abel Magwitch just raise Pip life from poor boy into a healthy and almost wealthy young man, he also changing Pip’s mind on how he sees him self, or as I said before, carry-away with all the good and glorious life of the richest and higher society. His simple dreams become more complex, and in here Miss Havisham came-in with her role, to pursue Pip with her ‘twisted-crazy-plan’ using her adopted daughter, Estella. All suddenly, I start remembering the story behind ‘The Vanity Fair’ by William Makepeace Thackeray, about a naive young girl, thrown-out into higher society, then she changing all her appearance, her personality even created almost new identity. Well, enough of those – let’s back on Pip’s journey – who really makes me want to ‘knock’ his head and says ‘wake-up’ and sees was in front your eyes... [ pardon my language ]
  • What was your strongest impression on the character(s)? You can quote the dialogue or narration you got the impression from.
I think Pip was the weakest character ( I didn’t say he was bad person, just not smart or brave enough to stand-up for his own ), if I had to compare it with Miss Havisham, despite she was a crazy-lunatic woman, but she really pursue her dreams : which is to take revenge in the name of ‘love’ – sick and twisted, but then again, don’t you ever heard about this phrase : “Nothing worse than a woman scorne – her revenge will puts the suspects unto the grave” ...and well hello, on ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ the main reason why those characters are suffer, also ‘coz by a woman’s revenge ( how this themes repeated again ? )
“Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape.”
“The unqualified truth is, that when I loved Estella with the love of a man, I loved her simply because I found her irresistible. Once for all; I knew to my sorrow, often and often, if not always, that I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be. Once for all; I love her none the less because I knew it, and it had no more influence in restraining me, than if I had devoutly believed her to be human perfection.”

  • What are the strengths or weaknesses of your character(s)?
Pip have good heart, but his environment and chilhood memories either makes him hated very much or he just trying so hard to achieve more on his present in the higher ad honorable society (which is not makes them as a better person, just different from their outer-looks and appearances). He willing to sacrifice friendship or listen to his councense, about what’s right and what’s wrong, and people will said it that all simply ‘cause of ‘love’ – but the meaning of love already ruins by ‘wrong passion’ who allegedly leads by Miss Havisham.
  • How do they develop throughout the book?
This stories so typical likes the ways people’s who had power and knowledge in money, plays others mind, ruins their life just for fun or when they got bored. But Dickens puts another mystery, what if those part combine with dark-secret life of its past, involving revenge that consume their mind and soul. It’s a dramatic stories and both Pip and Miss Havisham’s journey likes a horse racing side by side, each one trying to gets into the finish line to collect their reward, never realize they both tied-up with the same chains – and when the others falling, it also grab the other’s falls ...
  • What makes you love/hate them?
Mmm...again, I don’t quite hate nor love them too much, something I just realize, while reading Dickens’ (even when I finally finished reading it) I came across with lots and lots questions – his stories never simple, even if its a simpler stories, after a while, I still have another questions ‘flying-around’ in my mind. Why I cannot simple hate nor love them? ‘coz Dickens always puts another reason behind ‘why’ he/ she do all the meanest-ugly-bad-crazy-annoying-dreadfull acts. Is this means I have to re-read again to understand what the meaning of its stories ???
  • What lessons or influences you got from them?
Be very careful on the suddenly a generous rewards coming into your life (^_^) ... no seriously, someone mention this to me years ago. And judging by the bad-experiment in life, well maybe we ought to more careful and gets some awareness on the people’s intension. But then again, we also has to appreciate all the goodness among us – be an open-heart person but don’t ever left your ‘mind’ when comes the wolf with a smile of the lambs ( can you combine the brain and the heart as equal part of your life, I think that’s the main-topics on this stories )
