MY CHARACTER THURSDAY [ 7 ] : "Elizabeth Bennet & Fitzwilliam Darcy" from Pride&Prejudice

MY CHARACTER THURSDAY ( 7

I’ve been on several project this month of August 2012, continoued The Classic Club, then Reading Jane Austen’s and my own Reading Challenge on Historical Fiction. On Austen’s my first pick-goes-on the famous novel ‘Pride&Prejudice’ – and yes, indeed I’ve been seeing the movies first, but that was a long time ago, so this week finally I finished reading it and makes the review ( you can see it in HERE )

In my CT Post this week, I want to talk  a little bit more, about some interesting character, there are :

Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet ( source )
Elizabeth Bennet, is the protagonist character on this novel, she is 20 years old, second daughter of the Bennet Family, she is not only young, beautiful, but also intelligent, lively, attractive to others around her, and had ‘witty’ personality too that something she use to light-up some conversation. She always speaks what’s in her mind, not afraid to hide it like common young ladies at her age (which means not quite young anymore and people expect her to be mature on manners). She know and realize that her father love her more than his others daughter, because of her witty and sharp-mind, and occasionally the sarcastic humor of his father thens to appears on her attitude too.

She’s more a daddy’s girl than to her mother, who had different agenda in her life : that women only had one goals on her life, get married with a wealthy & honorable husband then having children as many as they can. Knowing her inteligent & sharp-observation, she always thought she was a good-judgement on people characters. But by the ends of this stories, she learn that her good observation only works well at the people on the villages, but when comes to the new neighbornhood, she might had miss-judged them, and her ‘prejudice’ became source of trouble not only in her life, but also makes others life misareble.

Matthew MacFadyen as Mr. Darcy ( source )
Fitzwilliam Darcy, is also a protagonist character on this novel, even at first you might judge him as antagonist ‘cause of his arogant and ignoren personality. He is 28 years old, unmarried, wealthy and owner of the great estate of Pemberley in Derbyshire. From his looks is also promising, handsome, tall, intelligent and sharp-mind, but his personality rather un-social, specially among strangers. His debut on people of the village, when accompany Bingley’s Family, not very smooth because of his attitude. Instead of good and warm welcome from others, he gain  a lots of ‘bad-nick-name’ by villagers, especially on Bennet’s Family. His comment on Elizabeth Bennet was so rude and arogant, then again he never realize how bad that comment until later, when he found some interesting on Elizabeth unique personality.

"She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.
( ~Mr Darcy to Mr. Bingley about Elizabeth Bennet | Chapter 3 )

His comment on Elizabeth Bennet was so rude and arogant, then again he never realize how bad that comment until later, when he found some interesting on Elizabeth unique personality.

Mr. Darcy had at first scarcely allowed her to be pretty; he had looked at her without admiration at the ball; and when they next met, he looked at her only to criticise. But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she hardly had a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. To this discovery succeeded some others equally mortifying. ( Chapter 6 )

Their relationship so unique, on the surface others will see nothing than resentfull between them, but one person notice something different, and because of her jeaulousy on Darcy’s attention to Elizabeth, she cleverly makes some plan to keep away Bennet’s girl from her man (both her brother and Mr. Darcy). But she under estimate Darcy’s feelings that keep stronger everyday, until his careless move to Elizabeth, just bring the avoiding topic among the two of them, and even deep down inside their heart, both Elizabeth dan Darcy already attractive to each others, they end-up with hurting each others ..., all because of His Pride and Her Prejudice !!

"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

He spoke well; but there were feelings besides those of the heart to be detailed; and he was not more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of pride. His sense of her inferiority— of its being a degradation— of the family obstacles which judgement had always opposed to inclination, were dwelt on with a warmth which seemed due to the consequence he was wounding, but was very unlikely to recommend his suit.

In spite of her deeply-rooted dislike, she could not be insensible to the compliment of such a man's affection, and though her intentions did not vary for an instant, she was at first sorry for the pain he was to receive; till, roused to resentment by his subsequent language, she lost all compassion in anger.

"And this is all the reply which I am to have the honour of expecting! I might, perhaps, wish to be informed why, with so little endeavour at civility, I am thus rejected. But it is of small importance."

"I might as well inquire," replied she, "why with so evident a desire of offending and insulting me, you chose to tell me that you liked me against your will, against your reason, and even against your character? Was not this some excuse for incivility, if I was uncivil? But I have other provocations. You know I have. Had not my feelings decided against you— had they been indifferent, or had they even been favourable, do you think that any consideration would tempt me to accept the man who has been the means of ruining, perhaps for ever, the happiness of a most beloved sister?"

source )
"From the very beginning— from the first moment, I may almost say— of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form the groundwork of disapprobation on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry."

"You have said quite enough, madam. I perfectly comprehend your feelings, and have now only to be ashamed of what my own have been. Forgive me for having taken up so much of your time, and accept my best wishes for your health and happiness." ( Chapter 34 )

Oh my ... oh my ... my lessons, never say anything when you angry, special to someone you secretly really-really like, even falling-in-love, why ?? People, you should know, words can be lethal than a knife, ‘cause “words” like that can tore some permanent scar on the heart. I’ll bet this two character almost immediately regrets what their saying each others when they’re appart. On my next lesson on this stories are so beautiful, makes my broken-hearted suddenly become warm of the humbleness and understanding of each others, makes me wanna hugh them (^_^) ... seriously !!!

"Neither duty, nor honour, nor gratitude," replied Elizabeth, "have any possible claim on me, in the present instance. No principle of either would be violated by my marriage with Mr. Darcy. And with regard to the resentment of his family, or the indignation of the world, if the former were excited by his marrying me, it would not give me one moment's concern— and the world in general would have too much sense to join in the scorn." "He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman’s daughter; so far we are equal"  ( Chapter 56 )

"You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever." ( Chapter 58 )
Elizabeth, feeling all the more than common awkwardness and anxiety of his situation, now forced herself to speak; and immediately, though not very fluently, gave him to understand that her sentiments had undergone so material a change, since the period to which he alluded, as to make her receive with gratitude and pleasure his present assurances.

"I have been a selfish being all my life, in practice, though not in principle. As a child I was taught what was right, but I was not taught to correct my temper. I was given good principles, but left to follow them in pride and conceit. By you, I was properly humbled. I came to you without a doubt of my reception. You showed me how insufficient were all my pretensions to please a woman worthy of being pleased."
( Mr. Darcy to Elizabeth Bennet )

For your information, I don’t like readings classic because of ‘the conversation’ intends too long and feels like on the journey travel the longest path than approach direct conversation, and this reading also almost makes me give-up on the same way, but in the middle through ending, those long dialog and conversations suddenly makes my heart warm and to be clear how Austen’s can describe though and feeling between two couples. How they realize the mistake, how they learn the truth with hard and bitter feeling, then how they overcome their lackness, their pride, their prejudice, and confront the demon inside themselves. I just gonna say, its so romantic with nothing but the truth, about the weakness of human feelings, but also showing the greatness of love and caring.

  1. I also like Liz Bennet and Mr. Darcy. They are both very funny, and i like to read their conversation. Perhaps the best part of the book is when Liz must tell her father that she now loves Darcy.

  2. Seems Liz's character is quite interesting, but it still doesn't make me interested to read the book ^^
