Saat pertama kali melihat buku ini di sebuah toko buku, rasa penasaran membuatku segera membelinya – bagaimana Dickens menuliskan kisah-kisah horor tentang hantu ? Setelah mulai membuka halaman demi halaman, ternyata penampilan fisik luar buku ini tidak sesuai dengan bayangan pertama yang muncul dibenakku. Ini merupakan koleksi cerita pendek (short-stories) karya penulis ternama Charles Dickens – yang dikenal lewat karya-karya beliau “Oliver Twist” ; “ A Tale of Two Cities” ; “Great Expectations” ; “David Copperfield” ; dan masih banyak lagi.

Edisi terjemahan kali ini menampilkan 3 pilihan novella (=lebih pendek dari novel, tapi lebih panjang dari cerpen) yang cukup dikenal melalui kumpulan kisah Natal (Dickens’ Christmas Stories) dan kumpulan kisah hantu (Dickens’ Ghost Stories). Meski termasuk dalam kategori novella, Dickens mampu menyajikan suatu kisah yang mencekam, menghanyutkan sekaligus menyentuh dan memberikan makna yang dalam bagi para pembacanya. Harus kuakui bahwa diriku pribadi tidak pernah menyukai tipikal cerita pendek, karena rata-rata kisahnya ‘terlalu pendek’ tanpa memiliki makna atau tema yang cukup mendalam untuk disimak atau diingat. Namun harus kuakui bahwa untuk kali ini, ke-3 novella yang disajikan mampu memenuhi ‘ekspektasi-ku’ dan memuaskan rasa dahaga sebagai penikmat cerita.

Semua orang tahu siapa Ebenezer Scrooge – satu-satunya pemilik firma Scrooge & Marley, sepeninggalan Marley bertahun-tahun silam. Ia adalah sosok pria tua yang sangat tamak dan pelit luar biasa. Tiada satu pun manusia mulai anak-anak hingga dewasa yang berkenan sekedar menyapanya jika berpapasan di jalan, karena beliau juga bukan orang yang ramah terhadap siapa saja.  Hanya orang-orang yang tidak memiliki pilihan lain, yang bersedia berhubungan dengannya. Salah satunya adalah Bob Cratchit – juru tulis yang malang di firma tersebut, harus bekerja tanpa henti dengan penghasilan yang sangat minim, demi memenuhi kebutuhan keluarganya. Yang lain adalah Fred – satu-satunya kemenakan Scrooge, yang tak pernah bosan mengunjungi dan mengundang pamannya yang penggerutu serta antisosial untuk bergabung dalam perayaan Natal bersama keluarga, yang selalu ditolak mentah-mentah setiap tahunnya.

Maka menjelang perayaan Malam Natal, mendekati akhir tahun, kembali Ebenezer Scrooge pulang seorang diri di kediamannya yang luas, gelap, suram dan dingin, menggerutu dan mencaci-maki orang-orang yang membuang-buang waktu dengan berlibur dan berpesta, alih-alih bekerja mengumpulkan uang. Malam itu seharusnya berjalan seperti biasa, sebagaimana Scrooge menjalani malam-malam sepi tanpa peduli akan nasib orang di sekelilingnya. Namun malam itu terjadi sesuatu yang dapat dikatakan cukup mengerikan dan menakutkan, yang jelas setelah kejadian itu – kehidupan Ebenezer Scrooge mengalami perubahan total, ia menjadi sosok manusia yang berbeda. Sesuatu telah menyentuh bagian terdalam dan tersembunyi dari jiwanya yang tersesat selama bertahun-tahun, dan bagaikan nyanyian Kidung Natal yang terdengar di segala penjuru dunia, jiwa-jiwa yang celaka dan senantiasa menghujat kemulian-NYA, berubah-bertobat-terselamatkan. Maka para malaikat pun bernyanyi bersama dengan umat manusia yang merayakan-NYA.

My Random Though :

I’ve been known A Christmas Carol story just like common people, through songs, poets, and of course the latest movies adaptation play by Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge. But this is my first time actually read it Dickens’ original books (even thou is a translation edition), and my perspective on this changes immediately. For several years, I’m thinking Christmas Carol jusat another story-telling for children, specially around Christmas Eve. But now I know that was really wrong, and quite the opposite. This is a story about a man who had known as the greedy, grudge, bitter, and named as the bad exampler when ever everybody talks about something they  didn’t like. The truth behind this story, Scrooge is an ordinary man, who had falling, hard-falls in his life, and he lost his spirits throgh the battle between good and evil, and he choose the wrong path into his life.

What amazingly, Dickens puts ‘magic’ and ‘supranatural’ into the story, about the journey of lost man searching his soul and find the real truth hidden so deep, buried into his past. Through the known characters as ‘Three Ghosts’ : Ghost from Past – Present – Future, Scrooge re-live and changes his entire purpose of life and find new meaning to rejoice and acceptence the ‘gift’ from Almighty. I never though reading the visitation of these ‘ghosts’ ca be really scary yet touch the deepest feeling inside me. Can you imagine what kind of person Ebenezer Scrooge in childhood until he grews-up ? Was he born as the ugly, bitter, grudge person ? Suprisingly, he just like any others human being. Born and raise with love and caring, had dreams and seeking out the purpose of his life with enthusiasm and great imagination. But somehow, between those journey, he had to face something – something that makes his mind changes and it can says that he sold his soul into the devil’s.

I think that why this story can still reconnect with all readers after many century, from man and woman, from young people until the oldest. They – I pressume just like my self, had find ‘a piece’ of our souls in this character of Ebenezer Scrooge. We might not as greedy as him, nor always grudging about the life, but we all had life on past that give another meaning on our present life, and who knows what kind of life we will have in the future. Secondly, I’m also thinking, the thought that we can change or said re-live our life just like changing ‘switch’ on ‘remote-control’ of our life – that was quite tempting. If Ebenezer Scrooge got his second chance to live another life, can we all had the same and equal chance too ? For all our lost dreams, our lost relationship with someone we love, our regrets not doing a better job in the past. But then this story got the best ending, you – yourself can changing all that in the past, even it is happen yesterday, by focusing on what matter today – cherish all that, give thanks on His Blessing and do the best thing you got every day, every hours, every minutes, every seconds. This is a quite short story, but I don’t why it’s gotten so deep inside my mind, scary but love it for the same time.

Dahulu kala hiduplah dua kakak beradik yang saling menyayangi dan senantiasa melakukan apa pun bersama-sama. Sang kakak – seorang bocah laki-laki yang gemar berkelana, menjelajahi berbagai kehidupan luar dan merenungkan berbagai hal. Sang adik – gadis mungil yang ceria dan selalu menemani sang kakak, bertanya tentang apa pun yang mereka temukan serta lihat, tentang keelokan bunga-bunga, tentang  tinggi dan birunya langit, tentang gemercik air yang mengalir di pegunungan. Namun yang paling mereka sukai adalah memandang langit bebas di malam hari, melihat bintang-bintang nan cemerlang, dan ada satu bintang paling terang yang selalu muncul terlebih dahulu diantara bintang-bintang lainnya. Bintang tersebut selalu muncul setiap hari, berada di posisi yang sama, menyapa kedua bocah malam menjelang mereka terlelap. Bintang dan kedua bocah ini menjadi sahabat erat yang mengingatkan akan kebesaran Tuhan. Kemudian suatu saat terjadi peristiwa menyedihkan, mereka harus berpisah. Salah satu diantara mereka harus pergi ke tempat yang tampak dekat di depan mata, namun tak terjangkau karena berada di dunia yang berbeda. Namun tali kasih diantara mereka tetap terjalin kluat seiring perkembangan waktu, melalui berbagai cobaan serta badai kehidupan yang menyedihkan serta menyayat hati. Semuanya harus dijalani, hingga tiba waktunya untuk mereka semua berkumpul kembali di tempat yang indah dan menyenangkan – suatu saat, di waktu yang tepat.

My Random Though :

This is a very-very short story, but then again Dickens proove his talent on writing about the meaning of life and praising God’s Love on His Child. What can I say when the lost of beloved one are turn into story that give us hope, not to turn bitter nor blame it the sadness we got, but to hold in faith that someday we all will be reunited again. You can said it’s childish story, but again for me it’s so sweet and touch my feelings, I even don’t care if everybody mocks me as big-whimpy-girl, if  you don’t care or even touch by the story, well it might be you got no feelings at all ...

Apa yang kau pikirkan jika mendengar kata-kata “HANTU” disebutkan ? Bisakah dirimu membayangkan wujud serta perilaku makhluk ini ? Dalam kisah ketiga dari antologi karya Dickens ini, tema tentang adanya kehidupan supranatural kembali dituturkan dengan gaya serta kisah yang sama sekali berbeda sekaligus menakjubkan. Kisah ini berputar pada sosok pria bernama Mr. Redlaw – seorang ahli kimia yang hidup seorang diri, menghabiskan waktunya dengan mengajar siswa-siswanya, dan merenungi kehidupannya di malam hari. Beliau menjalani kehidupan yang sama selama bertahun-tahun, dengan rutinitas sama, bertemu dengan orang-orang yang sama. Hingga entah mulai kapan, beliau mendapat kunjungan aneh dari sosok yang mirip seperti manusia tetapi juga tak dapat dikatakan sebagai manusia biasa.

Sosok aneh itu selalu bernuansa hitam, gelap dan kelam, anehnya sering kali berwujud serupa dengan Mr. Redlaw. Dari sekedar menampakkan diri beberapa kali (hanya beliau yang dapat melihatnya, bahkan pengurus rumah tangganya, keluarga Swidger tak pernah melihat perwujudan makhluk ini), hingg akhirnya memulai percakapan dengan Mr. Redlaw. Jika Anda memiliki kesempatan melihat mereka berdua, duduk berhadapan, wajah tampak serupa namun memiliki kesan yang sama sekali berbeda. Kemudian suatu saat, tak tertahankan oleh kehadiran makhluk aneh yang mengusik hatinya, Mr. Redlaw menuntut jawaban, apa yang diingingkan oleh makhluk itu hingga merongrong dirinya ? 

Sang Hantu (demikian Mr. Redlaw memanggilnya) mengungkapkan apa tujuannya. Ia memikul beban berat akan rasa sesal, bersalah, kepahitan, kesedihan, kemarahan, kebencian, dengki, semua hal yang tak ingin dirasakan ataupun diingat oleh siapa pun. Mr. Redlaw mengenal itu semua, ia terpuruk dalam kehidupan yang suram karena ia selalu teringat masa lalunya yang menyedihkan, yang tak mampu diusir dari benaknya setiap malam. Kini sang Hantu memberikan penawaran yang sangat menggoda, ia mampu menghapus masa lalu  Mr. Redlaw, hingga semua hal yang ingin ia lupakan, akan selamanya menghilang dari kehidupannya. Bukankah manusia akan menjadi makhluk yang lebih bahagia jika terbebaskan dari kenangan serta ingatan masa lalu yang buruk ? Penawaran itu disertai dengan syarat, pertama bahwa jika sudah terhapus maka tidak ada jalan kembali untuk memperoleh kenangan itu lagi, kedua : jika Mr. Redlaw menerima ‘penghapusan’ ini maka ia juga memiliki kekuatan untuk ‘menyembuhkan’ orang lain yang menderita dari masa lalunya, dan bisa maembantu menghapus masa lalu mereka. Persyaratan kedua tersebut mutlak harus dilakukan, Mr. Redlaw harus menyebarkan kemampuannya pada setiap orang yang ia jumpai.

“Tanpa melaksanakan kewajibanmu itu, apa yang telah kau peroleh ini akan musnah secepat kau mendapatkannya. Keyakinan hatimu mengatakan bahwa ingatan tentang penyesalan, kesalahan, dan masa lalu selalu dilakukan oleh manusia, dan mereka akan hidup lebih bahagia jika ingatan-ingatan buruk itu dihapuskan.Jadilah Sang Pembebas ! Bebaskan mereka dari ingatan buruk, detik ini juga, sebarkan karunia ini dengan kebebasan yang telah kau miliki.”

My Random Though :

Ever heard a phrase “Be Careful of What You Wishes For ?” Well this story can be a perfect example of those phrase, about a man who had spend all of his life, regreting on his mistake, failure, and bad things happen on the past. He cannot be happy with his present life, simply because he burden by all negative things, he carry for his whole life. Then suddenly, there’s scary ghost appears on him, offer him ‘one-way-deals’ where he can erase his whole ugly-bad-burden past life from his memory.  This character, Mr.Redlaw finally take the offer, ‘cause he had strong opinion that people will life happier if not having all the bad-memory of their life. But the offer also come with certain terms – after accepting the deals, he must spread his experient to others who also suffer from their past. Then Mr. Redlaw wake up with no memories at all on his past, much happier and decide to walking around the neighbourhood (something he never done all his life in those village), might be he will find others who needed his help. He got new power now, by touching the person who he want to help, those person will be erased their memory of their past. 

You’ll never guess what will happen next. All the dreams and wishes to sets a better living, a better humanbeing and happier envyronment, that just gone to another direction. Chaos, hatred, ignorance, cruelness, envy, jealously, ego-centris, those kind appears among people, makes the living unbarrelable by Mr. Redlaw, specially knowing he taking part of its, and don’t have a clue how to reverse back all of that. You see, I was at first thinking the same thought like Mr. Redlaw, even not fully agree with it like erasing the whole memories, but who want the bad memories stays in our mind ? But then with ‘a twisted-humour’ Dickens puts the worse character into the story : looks like a child but had old-ugly face, no manners, no feelings, no remorse, just like some creature from Hell – and this character are the reflected of what left on humanbeing if we not understood the meaning of sadness, grieving, failure, bitterness, ugly and bad thing happen on our life. Those are just ‘mirroring’ our happiness, acceptences, succeed, thankfull all God’s Blessing on His children.

I never-never quite like it or understood all kind of short story. For me it always to short to have some meaning nor even makes me so interest and remembering the story. Now I can change my perception, ‘cause Dickens’ short story was written with such tremendous though, gave me all new though even after two – three days finished reading them. Someone once mention to me that Dickens is one of great story-teller ever live, well for this I agree a millions times, specially how he can puts so many thought in  just a very short story. Love-love-it, and it’s my mission to search his others short stories, if most of them are quite good as it this, it will worth a great value to story-lovers like me, and almost certainly I will share it with you all (^_^)
