Ini adalah salah satu karya
Agatha Christie yang pertama kali kubaca di perpustakaan sekolah. Pembukaan
adegan yang menarik, kala Gossington Hall – kediaman keluarga Bantry,
dikejutkan dengan adanya sosok tubuh tak dikenal di dalam perpustakaan mereka.
Tubuh yang telah menjadi mayat itu adalah seorang gadis muda, tewas dicekik,
tak dikenal oleh keluarga Bantry maupun para penghuni di Gossington Hall.
Kolonel Arthur Bantry adalah sosok militer yang terhormat, demikian pula
istrinya Dolly Bantry yang aktif dalam kegiatan sosial. Mana hal ini merupakan
kejutan sekaligus menimbulkan shock dikalangan sosialita kaum terhormat ...
yang bisa dipastikan mengundang gosip yang tak menyenangkan.
Karena itulah, Dolly Bantry
secara khusus ‘menyeret’ sahabatnya Jane Marple untuk membantu menyelidiki
kasus tersebut, demi memulihkan kehormatan dan nama baik suaminya. Petunjuk
awal mengarah pada Hotel Majestic di Danemouth, tempat dimana korban yang
kemudian diketahui bernama Ruby Keene bekerja sebagai penari. Keluarga Bantry
tak mengenal Ruby Keene, namun mereka mengenal baik Conway Jefferson –
pengusaha kaya raya yang kehilangan anggota keluarganya pada sebuah kecelakaan,
dan dialah yang melaporkan kehilangan Ruby Keene dari Hotel Majestic. Pihak
kepolisian segera mengutus perwakilan untuk bekerja sama dengan Inspektur
Kepala Harper dari Danemouth, untuk segera menuntaskan kasus tersebut.
Namun Dolly Bantry melakukan
penyelidikan tersendiri bersama Jane Marple. Disni pula mereka bertemu dengan
teman lama Jane, Sir Henry Clithering, yang khusus datang memenuhi permintaan
sahabatnya Conway Jefferson. Perpaduan
penyelidikan oleh ‘kaum-awam’ dengan piak kepolisian, membawa mereka menelusuri
jejak pada tersangka utama, seorang pemuda bernama Basil Blake dari Hollywood,
yang menempati kediaman baru dan hidup dengan pesta pora yang mengguncang kehidupan
penduduk desa yang tenang. Lalu apa kaitan antara kehidupan dan perilaku Basil
Blake yang tidak menyenangkan kalangan terhormat di desa itu, dengan Conway
Jefferson hingga memasukan nama gadis
miskin yang tak dikenal dalam daftar warisannya ?
Conclusion :
Scandal is really an
interesting subject of gossip, even the cheaper one. Specially when you live in
small village, people talks about everything, and when something really bad
happen, in the name of honor, the vultures get anxious to ‘eat-alive’ their
victim, whether is the trurth or not. This is the main reason why Miss Jane
Marple ‘get-down’ in the street, looking for answers. Not only to catch the
murderer, but to restore honor and good-name of her friends, which is also
becoming victim of circumstances, when their home invaded as the crime-scene.
Just like any others
crime-story, there is protagonis and antagonis characters. But learning
Agatha’s works, I tried not to judge them by the first impression nor what
people’s talks about. Rumors are mostly just bad-gossip but there is a
little-bit truth in there. The good detektive must learn to sees, hear, and
choose between those, which one leads to the truth. Aside mystery and
psychological analysis as the key to solve the crime, the author gave such
impression, on how people can easly been manipulated, and social environment
taking role on how people reacts when something ‘not-quite-right’ happens in
their neighbourhood.
Talking about the victim of the
crime, mostly they talk about the girl who dies, but how about the Bantry’s
family ? Even people are not real murderer, they can be as cruel and mean
treating others in differences or unique situation. Only few of them, stan-up
in principles and good faith, that the truth lies beneath all the hatred and
pretences. I guess this is more than just ‘simple-crime’ ; is a knowledge of
human’s in extreme situation. People’s shows their truth of its self when the
worsething happen on their life...
